It wasn’t that long ago that the collapse of Mowbray College, 979fm’s former home saw the Melton based community radio station homeless and at risk of going off the air but now and thanks to the hard work of the 979fm committee of management and support from Catholic Regional College, Victoria University and the Melton City Council 979fm recently took its first big step towards a new home and a much bigger, brighter future.
Since the Mowbray College collapse 979fm has been broadcasting from a single room in the building occupied by the Melton Gymnastics Club at 9 Collins Road in the Melton industrial estate but last week a large portable building that will form the basis for a complete new radio station was relocated from CRC in Melton West to the Victoria University Melton South campus. When complete the building will contain 2 to 3 on air studios, a production studio, training room, guest area (green room), reception and administrative offices.
979fm president Wade Lester said that the station was extremely grateful for the community support it had received and wanted in particular to thank Catholic Regional College for donating the building and Melton City Council for its financial and organisational support.
“979fm was left in a desperate position by the collapse of Mowbray College but now through a great deal of hard work and the support of our community partners 979fm is looking forward to a bigger and brighter future than anyone would have anticipated even before the Mowbray collapse” he said.
It is anticipated that it will take two to three months of works before 979fm will actually occupy their new building, in the meantime the station will continue to broadcast from Collins road while it eagerly looks forward to the future.
