The Opening of a New BFL Season

The BFL season almost started with a bang last Saturday. We witnessed and described a fantastic game between East Point and Koroit which ended in a narrow win to Koroit, with just one kick in it. Of course Koroit is not part of the Ballarat league, because we watched a practice match to hone our commentating skills. At first we expected a “ho hum” match between two teams just going through the motions and experimenting with players and positions. The under 18 game saw East Point massacre Koroit, so we thought that Koroit hadn’t come to play. What a surprise we got when the senior game got underway. Right from the first bounce both teams threw everything at each other and neither got a decisive lead. Koroit were premiers in the Hampden League last year and were a classy outfit. It was a battle based mainly on speed and accurate disposal. Both teams tried to blast away from the centre bounce and stoppages all over the ground with explosive speed. It was a really great example of Australian Football and the spectators went away satisfied with what they saw.

Next week opens the new season with a grudge match between Melton and Melton South at the Recreation reserve. Both teams have revamped line ups and promising recruits. To add to their impressive arsenal, the Panthers have secured the services of Chris Tarrant, of Collingwood and Fremantle Dockers fame, while the Bloods will field three new giants to bolster the forward line. It promises to be a fabulous game.
